About MUD
This project is something that we hold close to our hearts, drawing on our lived experiences and collective discussions around mental health. In collaboration with musician Ben Udin, we created MUD, a film exploring the struggles of someone living with depression. Drawing on themes of anxiety and monotony, we explore how the mundane nature of the everyday often creates tedious patterns of living. MUD delves into how our energy is exhausted by the attempt to cope with day to day life and reaches an acceptance of this existence.
Taking an interest in philosophy and myth, we were drawn towards metaphors that reflect very real experiences of human life: particularly, The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus. A story of a man who is condemned by gods for eternity to push a boulder up a hill every day, only to watch it roll back down. Through repetition and metaphor, we explore the individual's persistent struggle against the absurdity of life.
In collaboration with Ben Udin, we wanted to create a score that reflected the individual's progressively heightened emotional state.
